The Kaws Team

Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work. ~ Vince Lombardi

Kate, our General Manager worked at a veterinary practice for two years before starting at KAWS and brings her passion for animal health and welfare to the society. Her main focus at Kaws is to educate the public about animal care, because most cruelty is born out of ignorance. She has a background of vocational work with both humans and animals. Kate has a welcoming disposition, and enjoys the visits of both volunteers and the public.

Helpus has been working for KAWS for 16 years, and has been a solid rock at the shelter. God must have known what his destiny would be, as his name could have been no more appropriate. With his life committed to caring for animals, he is an exceptional example of going the extra mile when it comes to rescuing and sparing animals from further harm. Married to Lucy, he has four children – Sidwell 13, Constance 11, Porche 8 and Blessing 4 years old. Helpus enjoys reading about animals and nature in general, spending any spare time he has watching wildlife documentaries.

Debbie – our Office Manager has been at KAWS since April 2009 taking calls from the public, dealing with incoming reports and sending the inspectors out on calls as well as the general running of the office. She is unmarried and lives with her 3 dogs. For relaxation she enjoys hiking, bird watching, reading and being creative.

Goodman has been a fieldworker with KAWS for close on 4 years. His amazing dedication and enthusiasm are a pure joy to witness. With a lovely smile, and an infectious laugh, his bubbly personality infuses everyone he meets in his day-to-day work. Although appearing to be shy and quietly spoken, his confidence and focus come into play as he interacts with his team and the patients. Goodman is married to Siphethu and has two sons Lusizo 4 and a newborn baby Linemitha. His family home is in Pelteen in Kingwilliams Town. He enjoys soccer, listening to music, and keeping up with current events by reading the daily papers.

Lastborn has been with KAWS for 3 years, and imbued with a wonderful sense of humour, he has a way of lifting spirits when things are not going well. A natural and gifted leader, he is able to diffuse conflict situations in a professional and controlled manner. Working in areas which can easily become volatile, Lastborn’s attributes make him a wonderful member of the team. Married to Nokhuselo, he has a daughter Sinovuyo 5 and a son Amahle who is 1 year old. His family live in Prudhoe near Peddy in the Eastern Cape. Gospel DVD’s, reading books and magazines, and enjoying a good game of rugby, are the ways that Lastborn enjoys spending his time out.

Paul has been with KAWS for 2 years, his wonderful smile lighting up the shelter on a daily basis. A brilliant runner (often required in this business), Paul is the man to call on. Fearless when faced with aggressive dogs and cats, Paul’s calming ways ensure that the job gets done with the least fuss. One of seven children, Paul’s family lives in Tayari in Malawi. He enjoys watching soccer and reading books about the subject closest to his heart – wildlife, nature and animals.

Hester has been with the society for a year. Married with a teenage daughter, Hester is the general “dog’s body” – keeping the shelter in tip top shape, and a wonder with bucket and broom. Keeping the shelter neat and tidy is of utmost importance, and fresh blankets and towels are part of Hester’s housekeeping duties.

Victor has been with KAWS for 8 months, quietly spoken and well mannered with a most reassuring strength about him. With great confidence and control when working with the animals his calm spirit is sensed by them – indeed a wonderful and rare attribute. Married to Praise, he has a 9 month old son Daniel. Victor’s family originate from a village Mzuzu in Malawi. In his free time, Victor enjoys playing guitar, reading novels and entering into interesting discussion on various topics with his friends.
